Our People

Jayker owes much of its success to our dedicated, knowledgeable, and highly trained staff members. Many employees have been at the company for years, and as a result they know the business, the plants, and our customers well. This enables us to offer the top quality service that our busy customers depend on, while providing a vibrant workplace that helps our employees learn and grow.

Our History

As our customers’ needs have changed, our business has evolved with them – ensuring that we always provide dependable service that meets their latest needs. Jayker was founded in 1978 by Doug and Meredith Carnahan, who still own the company today. For the first 15 years, Jayker operated as a wholesale tree and container plant grower. As the company built more experience in the industry, they began to see a huge need amongst their customers for a new kind of service – the “one stop shop.” Landscape professionals are busy, and increasingly wanted to use a single supplier for all their plant material. To meet this need, Jayker added re-wholesale plants to their offerings. This significantly increased the variety of plants the company was able to offer, and proved to be extremely popular with customers.

Today, Jayker is a re-wholesale-only nursery completely focused on the one-stop-shop model. We’ve found this approach adds exceptional value to our customer experience, especially when combined with the services of our highly trained staff.

1978 - Beginnings

The Carnahans moved to Idaho, and bought a house in Eagle with acreage that had scotch pines. People started approaching them asking if they could buy the trees. They started Jayker as a hobby, with Meredith managing the tree growing work.

1980 - Growth

The business grew rapidly, and the Carnahans bought 16 more acres in Eagle to serve as growing grounds and office. They built the company into a full time tree-growing concern with multiple employees. In the late 1980s, they added container plant growing to the mix.

1996 - The Big Move

Having outgrown the old 16-acre farm in Eagle, Jayker moved to Meridian. There, they built the Iconic “Big Red Barn” (headquarters for the next 10 years) and increased growing capacity to 300+ acres.

2000 - New Visions

The company began to focus more heavily on a vision of one-stop shopping. They started a re-wholesale business to meet the customer demand for more variety, and began to offer a broader range of plants than they were growing at the time.

2006 - Black Cat Move

The company moved headquarters again, to the current Black Cat and Chinden road location.

2015 - Next Stage

Jayker made a strategic decision to focus the business just on re-wholesale-only plant material and the vision of one-stop shopping. This involved moving away from growing altogether, so they sold the grower side of the business to two longtime Jayker employees. This separate business is now one of Jayker’s suppliers.
